The Communications Authority (CA) will continue to update the regulatory regimes taking into account worldwide trends in telecommunications and have the spectrum planning in line with the developments at international and regional levels. Among others, suitable spectrum in different frequency bands will be timely released to support further development of 5G and meet the needs of emerging radiocommunications use for provision of innovative services in Hong Kong.
We will continue to streamline relevant requirements and procedures to enable local telecommunications operators to access lands, buildings and public facilities for establishment of telecommunications lines and radio base stations to provide quality telecommunications services to the public in an efficient manner.
We will continue to facilitate the establishment of external telecommunications facilities so as to enhance Hong Kong’s position as the regional communications hub:
- Lands Department awarded a land lot at Chung Hom Kok Teleport to the successful tenderer in March 2022 for the establishment of an external cable landing station. We will continue to work with the relevant Government departments to provide suitable land lots in Chung Hom Kok Teleport in 2022 for external telecommunications infrastructure with a view to further enhancing the overall capacity and diversion capability of Hong Kong’s external telecommunications network.
- Five new regional submarine cable systems are under planning or construction and will be gradually put into service from 2022 and onwards. We will continue to facilitate the landing of more new submarine cables in Hong Kong.
Broadcasting licensees face a challenging business environment from both the COVID-19 pandemic and the intensifying competition from Internet-based media services. The CA will continue to refine the regulatory regime with a view to providing a more flexible and facilitating operating environment for the broadcasting industry without compromising the interests of the audience.
