Hong Kong's mobile market continues to grow fast over the past decade, with mobile penetration rate reaching around 323% as at January 2022, 1.5 times of that 10 years ago.

Mobile Services
Hong Kong was moving from 3G to 4G era when the CA was established. In April 2012, the majority of mobile data services users, around 8.1 million, were 3G users. Nowadays, the majority are 4G users, with the number standing at more than 19.9 million (as at January 2022). With 5G services commercially launched in April 2020, there were 3.0 million 5G users as at January 2022 and the number is fast growing.

Mobile Data Usage Per Capita Per Month
Mobile connectivity is indispensable to our daily lives nowadays. There has been tremendous growth in mobile data usage over the past decade. As of January 2022, the monthly mobile data usage per capita was 16 GB, 26 times of that 10 years ago.

Supply of Radio Spectrum
During 2019 to 2021, the CA has released a total of 2 130 MHz of new radio spectrum in the low, mid and high frequency bands for the provision of public mobile services including 5G services. The new spectrum released is three times that of all the spectrum released for 2G/3G/4G services.

Capacity of External Telecommunications Facilities
Hong Kong continues to be a major telecommunications and internet hub in the Asia Pacific region over the past decade. As of December 2021, the total equipped capacity of external telecommunications facilities in Hong Kong was over 152 000 Gbps, over 20 times the capacity ten years ago.

Fixed Broadband Speed
Fixed broadband services are now available at the speed of up to 10 Gbps, 10 times faster than that in 2012. Among the 2.9 million customers who subscribed to broadband services, around 86% of them are enjoying services offered at the speed of 100 Mbps or above.

DTT take-up rate
Since the launch of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Services in late 2007, the overall DTT coverage reached over 99% by September 2013. The DTT take-up rate had been boosted up from around 73.5% in July 2012 to 95% by early 2021.
Satellite TV programme channels
Hong Kong remains the broadcasting hub in the Asia Pacific region. Hong Kong residents are able to receive free of charge unencrypted satellite television programme channels uplinked from Hong Kong and elsewhere. In October 2012, there were over 400 such channels available for reception in Hong Kong. The number was around 600 as at March 2022.
